Choosing Electives

Exam Programme — English (BME / MSE)

Overview

In your first year you select the courses you intend to take in year two and three to compile your exam programme. Your programme consists of the following components:

  • 15 ECTS — USE learning line
  • 45 ECTS — Elective courses (including the two electives chosen in year 1)
  • 120 ECTS — Core and major courses

You are free to design your electives yourself: choose coherent packages or standalone courses, both inside and outside the faculty.

OSIRIS PlanApp

Use the OSIRIS PlanApp to assemble and submit your exam programme for review by the Examination Committee. The tool lets you schedule when you will take each course and submit your programme for formal checking. The course catalogue inside the PlanApp also lists coherent packages and individual courses.

Tip: Replace placeholder links below with the actual URLs for your faculty when publishing this page.

USE Learning Line

Learning lines commonly selected by BME and MSE students include:

  • Digital Twin in Healthcare
  • Quality of Life
  • New Product Development and Marketing
  • Patents, Design Rights and Standards

Find a full overview of learning lines in the PlanApp course catalogue (filter for "USE learning lines" under coherent packages) or at the faculty’s information pages. Alternatively, you may opt for a secondary school teacher training route instead of a USE learning line — see the relevant pages for more details.

Practical Matters & Tips

Choosing external courses

  • Ensure minimal overlap with other courses in your programme.
  • Verify the course is not on the exclusion list for BME or MSE.

Where to find guidance

  • CANVAS page 8G005 — Modules > Bachelor Electives (coherent elective packages and common/excluded external electives)
  • Student mentor, senior students, OSIRIS, information sessions, and Check your Match.
  • Make an appointment with your study advisor if needed.

Planning for your Master

Start considering which Master’s programme you might want to pursue and identify helpful Bachelor courses for that track. An overview of Master’s programmes and the recommended Bachelor courses per specialization should be consulted when planning.

MSE students aiming for the Medical Engineering Master’s must follow several compulsory courses — check the programme page for details. If your chosen Master’s does not grant direct admission from BME or MSE, use your elective space to take required preparatory courses. Always discuss this with the study advisor of the intended Master’s programme.

Procedure by Cohort

Cohorts up to and including 2017

  1. Request your current exam programme from the BME Education Office by email. Include your student number.
  2. Indicate the desired changes on your exam programme and send it back to the Education Office.
  3. The Examination Committee will review your changes. This takes approximately 4 weeks.

Cohorts from 2018 onwards

  1. In the Osiris PlanApp, click OptionsResubmit proposal for Elective Space and USE learning line for approval.
  2. An orange notification will appear at the top confirming resubmission is possible.
  3. Make the desired changes to your exam programme.
  4. Under Options, choose Resubmit proposal.

Important: You may take courses that are not in your exam programme; these will be registered as extracurricular. Do not assume these credits will count toward degree requirements — they must first be reviewed by the Examination Committee.

BEP (Bachelor End Project)

To start your BEP you must meet certain participation requirements. Consult the programme’s BEP requirements page for the exact conditions.

If you are unsure which research group you want to do your BEP (or Master’s) with, review the information pages for all research groups.
