Healthcare in the Netherlands belongs to the world’s finest. Predominantly the government has taken good care in ensuring this high standard as a ‘caring-state’ (verzorgingsstaat). Because of the rising costs of health care, the agencies involved in the entire process (hospitals, home for the elderly e.g.) are pressured to keep costs as low as possible. No doubt, the quality of care provided in this country will suffer under this alteration, and this will negatively influence the patients and recipients of care as well.
One of the current developments and innovations to lower public health care costs, is offering (technological) adaptations which make it possible to transfer health care from an institution, to a patients’ home. This is also called extramural health care, and would reduce workload and costs of health care providers, while maintaining (or possibly even improving) quality of health care for patients or recipients. Technologies and innovations like peritoneal dialysis for kidney patients (which can be conducted in the patients’ home) and patient-specific insulin therapy for diabetes patients allow patients a higher level of autonomy while giving them the possibility to treat or cope with their illness in a comfortable environment, like their own home.
Therefore the symposium committee 2015 presents this year’s symposium on extramural health care and point-of-care testing. This will be held on the 2nd of June under the title “Take care of yourself – Bring healthcare to your doorstep” to signify the importance and possibilities this way of treatment might offer.
The Symposium committee has attempted to plan a well-balanced day filled with exciting speakers, from multiple areas (research, health care, business). Also, food and drinks will be made available throughout the day, including coffee and tea, lunch and a closing drink, during which the lectures and events of the day can be discussed.
